What is CLP labelling? | A Consumer Guide

What is a CLP label?
You may have seen the phrase ‘CLP compliant’ on many home fragrance websites and wondered what it meant.  The European CLP regulation came into force in January 2009.
It stands for (C) Classification, (L) Labelling and (P) Packaging of chemical substances and mixtures and the regulation requires home fragrance manufacturers like ourselves to ensure our products are correctly classified, labelled and packaged before being sold.
Although it may list some allergens (as required under the regulations) if you have a specific allergy then you must ask to see the allergen declaration in addition!

What is CLP Compliance?
At Hunter and Walker, we only source the highest-grade fragrances from very reputable suppliers. Once we have acquired the correct information for our CLP label, the next important step is the meticulous calculation and careful weighing of the base and oil ingredients.  Accurate record-keeping and batch numbering are essential.  By following this process we ensure our products have fully traceable origins and are CLP compliant.

Do all scented wax melts and candles require a CLP label?
No - You may find a very small quantity of fragranced wax melts and candles that do not require a CLP label.  That's because the % of fragrance oil (Or essential oil) used within them doesn’t contain a high enough quantity of any substance to require CLP regulations: but they are a rarity!
Even natural Essential Oils may contain substances that require CLP labelling, so the presence of a CLP label is not an indication of whether a product is natural or not.

How do I know if a business is CLP-compliant?
Ask! - No decent business would be offended by a customer enquiring about CLP compliance. Most would love you to ask questions about their product safety as they know you will go on to use them according to the directions and get the best scent performance.  So if you are met with a confused look or rudeness when asking about CLPs, shop elsewhere!
